Capital One Venture X vs American Express Platinum: the fee gap and the credits
Both cards charge a high annual fee and list credits that push back against it. Venture X has a $395 annual fee. Platinum has an $895 annual fee. A credit is only worth what you’d actually spend through it.

Which credits would you actually use?
Count each credit at what you’d actually spend through it, under any condition listed. Write down what you’d really use, not the “up to” amount.

The math
Platinum’s credits cover the fee gap when:
Platinum credits you’d use − Venture X credits you’d use ≥ $895 − $395
Count Venture X’s anniversary miles at what one mile is worth to you.
Earning moves the result too. Points and miles are your inputs, and they don’t have to be worth the same:
- Everyday spend: 2X miles on Venture X vs 1X point on Platinum, per dollar.
- Flights booked directly with airlines: 5X on Platinum vs 2X on Venture X.
- Flights through Capital One Travel: 5X on Venture X. Prepaid hotels through American Express Travel: 5X on Platinum.
Each dollar adds (Platinum rate × what a point is worth − Venture X rate × what a mile is worth) to Platinum’s side. A negative number goes to Venture X’s side.
